Named for the grassy stretch between the house and the lake, this home was built in 1846 by John Adolphus Nelles, son of William Nelles. John's brother Peter Ball Nelles shared this property and built a lovely home called Stone Shanty. It was unfortunetely razed when the Queen Elizabeth Highway was built.

Lake Lawn remained in the family until the death of John's great-granddaughter, Mary Burnham in 1986. The house is still being used as a residential home and has been lovingly preserved.

The Grimsby Historical Society, archives and brochures (call for availability), are located at the Carnegie Commons Building. They are available by phone or for a visit on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 am - 12 noon, or by appointment.

The Grimsby Heritage Advisory Committee (GHAC) was established as a subcommittee of Town Council in 1984. The role of GHAC is to advise Council on historical and heritage matters and implement programs and activities to increase public awareness and knowledge of heritage conservation issues. The Town of Grimsby currently has 15 properties, including Lake Lawn, designated under Part 1V of the Ontario Heritage Act.

Nelles Road
"Around 1800, William Nelles built The Hermitage on land near Lake Ontario. When he died, the land was divided between his sons, Peter Ball Nelles and John Adolphus Nelles. Peter had the eastern portion of the land, which he called Chestnut Park. John Adolphus had the western part on which he built Lakelawn. Two Nelles descendants, F.M. Manson and Lillian Drope, named this road in the 1920s." The Streets of Grimsby from A - W
