General Information

Located in front of the International Centre, the two meter tall statue of Confucius was a gift from Minjian University. The purpose of this statue was to show that Brock University now houses one of three Confucius institutes in Ontario. The institute has become a platform of cultural exchanges between China and the world enhancing the understanding of Chinese culture. The Confucius Institute is the third facility in Ontario. The institue at Brock represents two years of planning and negotiating to bring a facility that will fortify the teaching of languages and increase the opportunity of cultural exchanges, as well as help Brock develop links with academic institutions in China.

In order to be sensitive to Chinese beliefs and culture, Brock brought in a feng shui consultant to give advice about the placement of the statue on campus.

Historical

The Confucius institute at Brock is one of 3 in Ontario and one of 7 in Canada. To this day, there are more than 300 Confucius institutions located worldwide. The goal of these institutes is to understand and enhance Chinese culture in the area to promote multiculturalism. After two years of planning, Brock finally will be able to facilitate cultural exchanges and develop links with the academic institutions in China. Although Brock has offered classes in mandarin, the new Confucius institute will give Brock the formal certification for all mandarin language teachers in Southern Ontario.
