Fort Mississauga is located at the west end of Front Street in the Old Town district of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Fort is situated on a short trail which follows the shoreline of Lake Ontario. This national historic site was established by British forces immediately after the War 1812 for defense. The fort is now located within the grounds of the Niagara on the Lake Golf Course. Access is sometimes difficult if there is a tournament occurring or if there are many golfers present.
The trail provides benches and spectacular views of the lake.

Fort Mississauga is a large, square, brick defensive tower set within the remains of earthworks on the shoreline of the Niagara River. On the landward side, it is surrounded by golf greens located within the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Course. Fort Mississauga was declared a national historic site because it is an important example of military construction within a military complex of national historic importance. It was completed after the War of 1812. The fort and its central tower were located in a strategic position at the mouth of the Niagara River to protect the British and Canadian side of the frontier and to serve as a counterpoise to Fort Niagara on the American side. It is the only remaining example in Canada of this type of fortification, consisting of a square tower within a star-shaped earthwork.
