The Turney family is thought to have been well acquainted with Laura Secord's family. She was escorted to their homestead after she had given her message to Lieutenant Fitzgibbon to rest before she returned to Queenston.

The Turney (or Tourney) Homestead was located a mere 4 km from Decew House off Decew Rd, St. Catharines. After her historic walk to warn Lieutenant Fitzgibbon about the impending American attack Laura Secord was escorted to the Tourney Farmhouse. Several sources say that Laura was well acquainted with the Turneys, one even stating that Ms Tourney was a close friend and the owner of the farmhouse, while others say that the man of the house, George Tourney was simply well acquainted with the Lieutenant. What is known is that Laura was cared for and allowed to rest there before she returned to her anxious husband in Queenston the following day.Records show that George Turney was a Butler's Ranger (one of the men who fought with the British during the Revolutionary War) who was killed in the War of 1812 at the Battle of Chippawa.

The homestead has long since disappeared but the Turney family burial ground still exists in the woods north of Tailrace Road, the small road which leads south from Power Glen Village to Decew Falls Generating Station. Alhough the Turneys did not formally own the land, the lots were eventually deeded to the family.
