Laura Secord Secondary School was opened in 1966 at 349 Niagara Street, St. Catharines. The building is in the former Grantham Township, which was a transited ground for retreating forces during the War of 1812 between Burlington Heights to the West in Hamilton, Ontario, and Fort George to the East in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

The school is a tribute to the legacy of Laura Secord and the War of 1812: it uses the unofficial mascot of a cow, a reference to Laura's supposed animal companion on the trek to Fitzgibbon's headquarters at DeCew Falls in 1813.
